Popular photo messaging service Snapchat was the subject of a hack this week which resulted in 4.6 million accounts’ information being posted publicly online. This included phone numbers and the connected usernames. The website containing the leaked information, SnapchatDB, said that it was gained through a recently identified exploit and that they are making the data available in an effort to convince the messaging app to improve its security. You can find out if your information was leaked over at http://lookup.gibsonsec.org/lookup.

Now today Snapchat has finally commented on the situation on its blog. Snapchat outlines what exactly happened and say they will be releasing an updated version of the Snapchat app that will allow users to opt out of appearing in the Find Friends feature, which was how the hack was successful. The company also says that they’ll be improving rate limiting and other restrictions to address future attempts to abuse the service.

Snapchat urges anyone that finds a security vulnerability to email them at [email protected].
